The tailless Pembroke Welsh Corgi is similar to the long-tailed Cardigan Welsh Corgi. They were considered the same breed until 1934 when the AKC recognized them as a separate breeds.
This breed was recognized by the AKC in 1934 and grouped as Herding.
The AKC acceptable breed colors for a Pembroke Welsh Corgi are red, sable, fawn, black and tan with or without white markings. The AKC does not accept registrations for Pembroke Welsh Corgis if these dogs have a white body color and red or dark markings or if the coat has distinct bluish or smoky cast. The AKC does not recognize black and white Corgis with no tan present.
